Apple\u2019s new AirPods 5 might look like another yearly headphone upgrade, but one feature points towards something much bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With Live Translation, conversations in another language can be translated and played directly into your ears. AirPods 5 start at \u00a3119 in the UK, putting the technology inside one of Apple\u2019s most mainstream products yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And that could change more than how we travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Apple\u2019s new AirPods 5 are now on sale, starting at \u00a3119 in the UK, with a \u00a3139 version available with a wireless charging case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are the usual upgrades you would expect from a new pair of AirPods. Apple says they offer better sound, improved durability and stronger Active Noise Cancellation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But for travellers and language learners, one feature stands out far more than the rest: Live Translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With a compatible iPhone and Apple Intelligence, AirPods can translate speech and play it directly into your ears while someone is talking. That means less time pulling out your phone, opening an app and passing it backwards and forwards during a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Translation earbuds are not new, but this is where things start to get interesting. Apple is putting the technology inside a product people already wear every day for music, calls and commuting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most people probably will not buy AirPods 5 specifically for translation. But the feature could quickly become one of those things you do not think much about until you are abroad, someone starts speaking another language, and your headphones suddenly become the translator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is where AirPods start to feel less like headphones and more like a translator you happen to be wearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once the languages you need have been downloaded in Apple\u2019s Translate app, Live Translation can be started from the AirPods, through Siri or directly on the iPhone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the other person speaks, the translated version is played into your ears through the AirPods. You can still see the conversation on the iPhone screen, but the idea is that you do not need to keep staring at your phone every few seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And only one person needs to be wearing AirPods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the person you are speaking to does not have a compatible pair, your iPhone can display your translated response or play it aloud for them. If both people are wearing compatible AirPods, each person can hear the conversation translated into their own language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The iPhone is still doing much of the work behind the scenes. Live Translation relies on Apple Intelligence and the Translate app, with the AirPods acting as the part that makes the experience feel much more natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is still not quite the effortless universal translator we have seen in science fiction, but conversations across two languages are starting to look a lot less awkward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple currently supports English<\/a><\/span>, French<\/a><\/span>, German<\/a><\/span>, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish<\/a><\/span> and Mandarin Chinese through Live Translation on compatible AirPods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That covers several of the languages travellers are most likely to encounter, but there are still some obvious omissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Arabic, Hindi and Russian are not currently supported, along with hundreds of other languages spoken around the world. So while AirPods can now help with plenty of everyday conversations, you cannot yet land anywhere in the world and expect them to translate whatever you hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That could change over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Apple has continued expanding language support across Apple Intelligence and its translation tools, so adding more languages to Live Translation would be a logical next step. For now, though, the feature is much more useful in some countries than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that is probably the biggest thing stopping AirPods from feeling like a true universal translator just yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The \u00a3119 price makes AirPods 5 look like a relatively cheap way to get real-time translation, but there is a catch: the AirPods are only one part of the setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To use Live Translation, you also need an iPhone 15 Pro or later<\/strong>, running iOS 26 or newer<\/strong>, with Apple Intelligence switched on<\/strong>. Apple\u2019s Translate app needs to be installed, and the AirPods themselves must be running the latest firmware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That means someone with an older iPhone cannot simply buy a pair of AirPods 5 and immediately start translating conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The feature is powered by Apple Intelligence, while the Translate app handles the languages being used. You also need to download the languages you want before starting a Live Translation conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So while AirPods 5 start at \u00a3119, that is not really the full cost of getting access to the feature. If you already own a compatible iPhone, it is a useful extra built into a relatively affordable pair of headphones. If you do not, the barrier to entry is considerably higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is an important distinction, especially when Live Translation is likely to be one of the features that attracts travellers and language learners to the new AirPods in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For a long time, speaking to someone in another language meant stopping the conversation to translate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n First it was phrasebooks. It just needs to work well enough, be easy to use and be there at the exact moment someone needs it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is where AirPods could have the biggest impact. They make translation feel less like specialist technology and more like just another thing your headphones can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For some situations, possibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you are travelling and just need to order food, ask for directions, check into a hotel or understand a simple question, real-time translation could remove a lot of the pressure to speak the local language yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is a big deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For years, one of the most practical reasons to learn another language has been simple necessity. You learn enough to get by because, at some point, you might need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Technology like this starts to chip away at that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But understanding a language is about much more than getting the right words from one person to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Humour, tone, slang, cultural references and the way people actually speak are much harder to reduce to a clean translation. Even when the meaning is technically correct, a translated conversation can still lose some of what makes it feel natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And there is also a difference between understanding what someone said and actually connecting with them in their own language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That may be where things get interesting for language learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If technology can handle more of the basic, functional conversations for us, people may eventually learn languages less because they have to and more because they want to understand the people, culture and world behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n AirPods probably are not going to kill language learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But they could start to change the reason people do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Real conversations are rarely as neat as the examples used to demonstrate translation technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People speak quickly. They interrupt each other, shorten words, use slang, change their minds halfway through a sentence and sometimes switch between two languages without even noticing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is where real-time translation still has plenty to prove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Accents are an obvious challenge. Spanish spoken in Madrid can sound very different from Spanish in Buenos Aires or Mexico City, just as English in Glasgow is very different from English in California. Regional vocabulary can change too, even when two people technically speak the same language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Slang and idioms make things harder again. Translating the individual words correctly does not always mean translating what somebody actually meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then there is the environment itself. A quiet conversation between two people is one thing. Trying to follow someone in a busy restaurant, train station or crowded street, with several people talking at once, is a much tougher test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Context matters as well. A single sentence can have completely different meanings depending on what was said before it, who is speaking and even the tone they use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And multilingual conversations add another complication. Plenty of people naturally switch between languages mid-sentence, known as code-switching, without stopping to tell a translation system that they have done it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n None of this makes real-time translation useless. Far from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the real test for AirPods will not be whether they can translate a carefully spoken sentence in a quiet room. It will be whether they can keep up with the messy, fast and unpredictable way people actually talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Putting a translator in your ears raises an obvious question: what happens to the conversations it is listening to?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Apple says Live Translation is designed to keep those conversations private. The languages used by the feature are downloaded to the iPhone first, allowing translation to happen on the device rather than sending the conversation elsewhere for processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That matters when people could be using the feature in airports, restaurants, workplaces or during private conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But there is another side to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The person speaking may not always realise their words are being translated through someone else\u2019s AirPods. In most everyday situations that probably will not be a problem, but it becomes more complicated when conversations are sensitive, personal or confidential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Apple\u2019s wider Translate service can use its servers in some situations, but Live Translation on AirPods requires the relevant languages to be downloaded beforehand, keeping the processing on the device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So the technical privacy protections are fairly strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The bigger question may be a social one: as translation earbuds become more common, will people be comfortable knowing that someone nearby could be understanding a conversation they would previously have assumed was private?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Live Translation may be the most interesting feature for language learners, but Apple has changed quite a bit elsewhere too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The biggest upgrade is Active Noise Cancellation. Apple says AirPods 5 can block up to 50% more outside noise than AirPods 4 with ANC, while still keeping the open-ear design rather than sealing the ear completely. There is also an improved Transparency mode and Adaptive Audio, which automatically adjusts how much outside sound you hear depending on your surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sound has been upgraded as well, with a new acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ designed to make music and voices sound richer and more detailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Battery life depends on which version you buy. The standard AirPods 5 offer up to four hours of listening with ANC switched on, while the \u00a3139 model with the Wireless Charging Case stretches that to five hours and up to 22 hours with the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Apple has also made them more resistant to dust, sweat and water, with an IP57 rating, which should make them a little less worrying to use in the rain or at the gym.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The more expensive version gets a couple of extra touches too, including wireless charging and volume controls built into the stem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n None of those features are as unusual as having a conversation translated into your ears, but together they make AirPods 5 feel less like a minor update and more like Apple trying to turn its most affordable AirPods into a much more capable everyday device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are still a long way from the universal translator imagined in science fiction, but the idea is starting to feel a lot less ridiculous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not long ago, translating a conversation meant pulling out a phone, opening an app and waiting for the result.
