You follow podcasts at normal speed. You might even watch series without subtitles and catch most of the jokes. Then someone asks you something perfectly ordinary and your mouth produces nothing at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sound familiar? It’s the most common complaint among Spanish learners anywhere, and it isn’t a sign that you’ve wasted your time or lack some talent everyone else was born with. It just means you’ve built one skill beautifully and left the other in a box. And that box is easier to open than it looks, because everything you need is already inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Think about what listening actually asks of you. You catch a few familiar words, read the tone, glance at the situation, and your brain quietly fills in the rest. If a subjunctive sails past unnoticed, nobody minds. The message still landed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now think about speaking. You have to find the word, choose the tense, conjugate it, decide between ser<\/em> and estar<\/em>, and get all of it out before the other person gives up waiting. Nothing fills the gaps for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But you know what? Researchers noticed this long ago. Merrill Swain, a Canadian applied linguist whose research has focused on second language acquisition (SLA), studied Canadian immersion schools where pupils spent years inside the language and still spoke far below what they could follow (more on that here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n If it happened to children living in the language all day, it can certainly happen to you on a podcast and a Duolingo streak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Knowing that the two skills are separate helps, but it doesn’t tell you where your particular blockage sits. In practice the freeze usually comes from a combination of things, and you will probably recognise yourself in at least some of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everything you know sits in two piles. One is enormous: every word you understand the moment you meet it, with context doing half the work. The other is much smaller: the words you can produce yourself, at speed, from nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Reading and listening feed the big pile. Speaking needs the small one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Picture yourself in a caf\u00e9, wanting a napkin, and “servilleta<\/em>” simply refuses to appear. You know it. You’ve seen it a hundred times. That isn’t forgetting, and it certainly isn’t stupidity. It’s just a word that has never had to leave your head before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Be honest about your study hour. How much of it is reading, listening, an app, a grammar exercise? And how many minutes involve your own voice?<\/p>\n\n\n\n For most learners the answer is a handful of minutes a week. If you’ve listened for four hundred hours and spoken for eight, your Spanish is behaving exactly as it should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Notice what happens the next time you freeze. You’ll often catch yourself hunting for a Spanish version of an English sentence you’ve already built in your head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Say you want “I’m looking forward to it”. Go looking for a word-for-word match and you’ll be there a while. Reach for “tengo muchas ganas<\/em>” and you’re already talking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same habit produces “estoy veinticinco a\u00f1os<\/em>” instead of “tengo veinticinco a\u00f1os<\/em>“, or “soy de acuerdo<\/em>” instead of “estoy de acuerdo<\/em>“. It’s why “me gusta<\/em>” and “se me olvid\u00f3<\/em>” feel slippery, since Spanish puts the subject where English speakers don’t expect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And it’s behind that stall over “por<\/em>” or “para<\/em>“, or sensing a subjunctive coming and abandoning the sentence. The fix isn’t more grammar. It’s starting in Spanish, even when what you start with is simpler than what you meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ever rehearsed a sentence perfectly in your head and lost it the second someone looked at you? That’s not a confidence flaw, it’s a capacity problem. Worrying about sounding silly uses the same mental space you need for finding words and conjugating on the fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Being answered in English makes it worse. It feels like a verdict, though it’s usually just someone being helpful in a hurry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The good news is that this gap closes quickly, because you aren’t learning Spanish from scratch. You’re learning to reach what you already have. Four habits do most of the work, and no worries, none needs a partner or a plane ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The most effective speaking exercise is also the least glamorous. Take one ordinary topic (your weekend, your job, the last film you watched\u2026) and talk about it for four minutes. Then tell it again in three. Then again in two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The squeeze is the point. Each round pushes you to deliver the same material faster, and the words begin arriving on their own. One study found the gains stuck for learners who repeated the same topic, but not for those given a new one each time (de Jong and Perfetti, 2011<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n No partner? Your phone will do. Record all three rounds and listen back to the last one only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fluent speakers aren’t building every sentence from scratch. They’re leaning on ready-made pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Learn “lo que pasa es que…<\/em>“, “es que…<\/em>“, “me da igual<\/em>“, “ahora que lo dices<\/em>” and “tengo muchas ganas de…<\/em>” as complete units and they come out whole, with nothing to assemble under pressure. Better still, most of them dodge the grammar that slows you down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pick one variety and stay with it. Something neutral like “\u00bfme pone un caf\u00e9, por favor?<\/em>” serves you almost anywhere, but each region has a shorter, warmer version: “\u00bfme pones un caf\u00e9?<\/em>” in Spain, “\u00bfme regala un tinto?<\/em>” in Colombia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Neither is more correct. Collecting half of each, though, leaves you sounding like nobody in particular, so choose the Spanish you’ll actually speak and let its phrases pile up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here’s a question worth sitting with. When a conversation collapses, is it really because you didn’t know the word itself or because you stopped dead when you couldn’t find it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Describe what you need instead: “la cosa para abrir el vino<\/em>“, “es como una mochila pero m\u00e1s peque\u00f1a<\/em>“, “un tipo de…<\/em>“, etc. Three or four frames like these will carry you through almost anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The learners who improve fastest are rarely those with the biggest vocabulary, but the ones who’ve stopped treating a missing word as a full stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/a>Why you can’t speak Spanish even though you understand it<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
